Primary SEMH Support: Support at the Wobble, Not the Cliff Edge

The Inclusive Education Trust delivers Surrey’s Primary PRU provision through Wey Valley College, The Fordway Centre and Reigate Valley College, supporting children across the county at times when they need it most.

With primary permanent exclusions rising and SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs becoming increasingly complex, early intervention has never been more important. Too often, support comes after behaviours have escalated. We believe it should come much sooner.

Our approach focuses on identifying needs at the first signs of concern and acting quickly to prevent difficulties from becoming entrenched. By working closely with schools and families, we help build understanding, confidence and consistency around SEMH support.

Through a collaborative, three-tier approach, we aim to strengthen mainstream provision, reduce the need for specialist placements and improve outcomes for children.

In simple terms, we focus on providing support at the wobble, not at the cliff edge - because the right help at the right time can change a child’s trajectory.
